Chapter Thirteen: A Night to Remember (Broken Lives)
Molly
Bobby and I have been staying at the Comfort Inn the last few weeks. We are using the money I got from the house to get off the streets for awhile. Itâs clean, and we have a place to sleep and bathe. We canât get an apartment with our background, so it is lucky for us that some hotels rent rooms by the week. When we have money we stay in a hotel; all other times, we live in the car.
Bobby and I still use although I want to get clean. I know that makes no sense, but itâs true. Bobby has no reason I know of to get or stay clean, but I do; I have a daughter whom I love and I want to see her.
Itâs easier to use drugs and stay high than it is to face reality. Being high lets me forget, and it lets me picture a happy life that I donât have. Distorted thinking â remember, I talked about this earlier?
âDoll, I think we should throw a party.â
I look over at Bobby; he is crushing pills in a bowl. A spoon, lighter, and needle are next to him on the nightstand.
âWho would we invite to come? Since we have been staying here, we havenât really seen anyone from the streets.â
âLet me take care of that.â
âSure, why not? I could use a pick-me-up. Iâm going to shower, and save some of that for me,â I say, nodding to the bowl of crushed pills.
âSure thing, Doll.â
I shower, dress in my old dirty clothes, and walk out of the bathroom to see Bobby passed out on the bed with the needle still stuck in his arm. I walk over to him and pull the needle out for him, and I also unloosen the belt he used for the tourniquet.
I look at the bowl on the nightstand â it is empty. I knew Bobby would use everything he crushed. Deciding he will be out of it for awhile, I get my car keys, pocket a few pain pills lying on the nightstand, and leave.
I stop by Walmart and pick Bobby and me up some new clothes and some snacks for later. Next I drive by my old house I shared with my husband and daughter and stop when I see the FOR SALE sign in the yard. I look at the quaint house Alec and I picked out together for our family home.
âMolly, close your eyes, I have a surprise for you,â Alec says, smiling his toothy white smile.
âAlec, you know I hate surprises,â I say, unable to control the smile on my lips.
âThis is one surprise I think youâll love.â He leans in and kisses me on each side of my mouth.
He holds up the black-striped tie that he is intending to use as the blindfold. âClose your eyes, Molly, or no surprise.â I pretend to pout and he says, âYou do realize I find pouty Molly very sexy, donât you?â He secures the tie around my eyes and ties it in the back.
